In the late hours of a Friday in East Chicago, Indiana, the life of 17-year-old Justin Charleston was tragically cut short. On March 14, 2025, the sharp report of eight gunshots pierced the night, prompting an alert from the city's ShotSpotter system at approximately 11:16 p.m. in the vicinity of the 3700 block of Dahlia Street.
Responding to the alert, East Chicago police officers began a search of the area.
Their investigation led them to a grim discovery near 3804 Erie Court and Commonwealth Avenue, where they found an unresponsive male. Medics were called to the scene, but it was too late; Justin Charleston was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. The Lake County Coroner's Office would later rule his death a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Within 24 hours, detectives from the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force had identified a suspect. A 16-year-old male was charged with murder in connection with Justin's death. Accompanied by his attorney, the teenage suspect surrendered to authorities. Due to his age, his name was not publicly released.
