Within hours of the shooting, authorities issued a regional alert as the suspect drove north on Interstate 95. In St. Lucie County on August 12, a lengthy highway standoff ended when Florida Highway Patrol troopers and other officers opened fire after the suspect advanced on them while armed, killing him at the scene. Officials said the man was the same individual wanted in Ramirez’s homicide.
