In the late spring of 2025, a camping trip for two high school students turned into a tragedy that would grip the community with fear and uncertainty for months. Seventeen-year-old Evan Clark, a male student at Arcadia High School, and his friend, 18-year-old Pandora Kjolsrud, ventured into the Tonto National Forest for a Memorial Day weekend outing. Their bodies were discovered on May 27 in a remote area near Mount Ord, situated between Mesa and Payson, Arizona.
Both had been fatally shot in what authorities immediately deemed a homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of the two teenagers continued throughout the summer with no immediate arrests, leaving friends, family, and the wider community searching for answers. The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. Friends and family remembered Evan as a kind and beloved individual whose life was tragically cut short.
More than four months after the grim discovery, a suspect was identified and taken into custody. On October 2, 2025, authorities arrested 31-year-old Thomas Brown in connection with the murders of Evan Clark and Pandora Kjolsrud. Brown was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Investigators revealed that DNA evidence found at the crime scene was instrumental in linking Brown to the killings. It also emerged that Brown had attempted to insert himself into the investigation by providing authorities with false and misleading information, including drone footage of the area where the teens were camping. He had reportedly been camping in the same area as the victims over the Memorial Day weekend.
