In the early morning hours of a Friday in Headland, Alabama, the life of 25-year-old Brandon Deshawn Welch was tragically cut short. Known affectionately to his family as 'Toot,' Welch was a young man with dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and bettering his life. He had a passion for writing poetry, music, and creating his own fashion by thrifting. Recently, he had started a new job at AAA Corporation and was excited about the potential for growth. Described as a respectful person who loved to smile and laugh, Welch was close to his family and enjoyed watching old sitcoms with his mother and playing video games with his older brother.
On October 3, 2025, as Welch was being dropped off at his home at the Green Tree Apartments by his girlfriend, an argument erupted when another car pulled up. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into gun violence. Welch's father, Timothy, ran outside in an attempt to de-escalate the situation but was also injured in the exchange of gunfire. Brandon Deshawn Welch sustained fatal injuries during the shooting. His father was treated for his injuries and released.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Headland Police arrested 19-year-old Shawn Michael Davis. He has since been charged with capital murder and one count of assault in connection with the incident that resulted in Welch's death and his father's injury. The tragic event has left Welch's family devastated and calling for an end to gun violence, remembering him as a good person with trials and tribulations, but ultimately their beloved 'Toot.'
