Among the deceased were two women—both aged 38—and their six adopted children, including Ciera Hart, a 12‑year‑old African‑American girl. The SUV came to rest upside down on a beach below the cliff. In the aftermath, the remains of Ciera Hart were not found at the crash site. A forensic pathologist testified during the coroner’s inquest that the body of Ciera Hart was too decomposed to determine a precise cause of death, though it was widely presumed that her manner of death matched that of her siblings—namely, being in the vehicle and killed as a result of the plunge.
