A thoroughly disturbing and tragic incident unfolded on March 26, 2018, in Mendocino County, California, when Abigail Hart, a 14-year-old adopted Black girl, met her untimely death alongside her family. Abigail Hart was one of six adopted children of Jennifer Hart and Sarah Hart both White women, who ultimately died in the same event.
The family’s SUV, a GMC Yukon XL, was discovered at the bottom of a steep cliff off Highway 1, ripped from normal life and hurled into the Pacific Ocean below. In the immediate aftermath, rescue teams located Jennifer and Sarah in the front seats, and the bodies of some of the children, including Abigail, were found in or near the overturned vehicle.
Initial reports described the crash as tragic and possibly accidental. However, growing evidence soon pointed toward a premeditated act. Toxicology findings revealed Jennifer Hart had a blood alcohol content of. 102—well above the legal limit—indicating she was legally intoxicated at the time of the crash. Sarah Hart was found to have a high level of diphenhydramine in her system—near toxic levels—as were two of the children, including Abigail.
Further investigation uncovered deeply troubling patterns in the family’s history. In 2011, Sarah had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic assault for physically abusing Abigail when she was only six years old; the incident became known after school officials discovered bruising on the young child’s body. Later, in early 2018, neighbors reported severe concerns, including that one of the children repeatedly came to their house begging for food, saying the children were being starved as punishment. A Child Protective Services visit was made on March 23, just days before the fatal crash, but the family left before the investigator could make contact.
A coroner’s inquest convened in April 2019 brought the full scope of the tragedy into focus. A jury delivered a unanimous verdict that Jennifer and Sarah died by suicide, while all six of their adopted children—including Abigail, age 14—were victims of homicide, described legally as having died “at the hands of another person, other than by accident”. Additional evidence from the inquest highlighted chilling details: Sarah Hart had conducted internet searches about suicidal methods, Benadryl dosage, drowning, and hypothermia during the days leading up to the crash. Investigators also learned that after leaving home, the vehicle had stopped at a scenic pullout some 70 feet from the cliff edge, idled for a moment, and then was driven over the edge at an accelerated speed—suggesting deliberate intent. It was notable that none of the occupants were wearing seat belts, despite accounts that Jennifer had been a strict enforcer of seat belt use in the past.
Abigail, the 14-year-old Black adopted daughter, suffered from bruising on her buttocks and legs that were determined by examiners to be old but recent and not a result of the crash itself—suggesting she had been physically harmed in the period preceding her death. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Devonte, age 15, was never recovered, though he was legally declared deceased and presumed to have died in the same incident.
No arrests were made in connection with the incident. Because it was determined that the parents themselves perpetrated the murder–suicide, no external suspect was ever identified or charged. In the aftermath, the deaths were officially ruled homicides for the children and suicides for the parents, and no suspects beyond the parents were involved.
Through the lens of these findings, the death of Abigail Hart emerges as a profoundly tragic act of filicide executed by her adoptive parents. A 14-year-old Black girl, once cared for by two adoptive White women, succumbed to violence at the hands of those entrusted with her protection. The entire family perished in an orchestrated plummet off a cliff, a fatal crash ultimately revealed not as an accident, but as an intentional murder–suicide.
