Louis Lafayette Mercer, a 62-year-old white male, was brutally murdered in El Cajon, California, on June 20, 1965. Mercer was attacked in his apartment during a violent burglary that also left his 57-year-old wife, Lola Mercer, severely injured. The assailant struck Mercer more than 20 times with a wrench, causing massive head trauma that led to his death. Lola Mercer was sexually assaulted and suffered brain damage from the attack. Her screams alerted neighbors, who intervened and likely saved her life.
The case remained unsolved for decades until DNA evidence preserved from the crime scene was reexamined in the early 2000s. Investigators linked the DNA to Clyde Carl Wilkerson, a long-haul truck driver from Arkansas with a history of violent crimes. Wilkerson had previously been convicted of rape, assault, and drug offenses, and was suspected in multiple murders across the United States. His criminal behavior included sexual sadism and extreme violence, often leaving behind disturbing crime scenes.
In 2002, Wilkerson was arrested at his home near Little Rock, Arkansas, after DNA samples collected from envelopes he had sealed matched evidence from the Mercer case. He was extradited to California and pleaded guilty to the murder of Louis Mercer and the assault of Lola Mercer. At the time of his arrest, Wilkerson was 63 years old and operating a meth lab out of his home. He was sentenced to life in prison and later died behind bars in 2016. His confession and conviction brought closure to a case that had haunted the El Cajon community for nearly four decades.
