Velma Faye Gray, a 42-year-old African American woman from Travelers Rest, South Carolina, was found dead on August 27, 1989. Her body was discovered by two fishermen floating in Lake Bowen near the South Carolina Highway 9 bridge. Her hands had been bound behind her back, and the coroner determined that she died of asphyxiation. The circumstances surrounding her death were immediately considered suspicious, and the case was treated as a homicide.
