On the morning of February 19, 1989, the body of Renee Cuevas, a 27-year-old Hispanic female, was discovered along Lambert Road near the now-defunct El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, California. The location and circumstances of her death raised immediate concerns, but despite investigative efforts at the time, the case went cold. Renee Cuevas was remembered by her family, particularly her cousin Yolanda Lui, who recalled her dimples and the warmth of her personality. The lack of leads and forensic limitations of the era left her murder unsolved for decades.
In 2003, forensic scientists at the Orange County Crime Lab made a breakthrough by linking the homicide of Renee Cuevas to another cold case: the 1987 murder of Shannon Rose Lloyd, a 23-year-old white female who had been sexually assaulted and strangled in Garden Grove, California. Although the DNA evidence indicated the same perpetrator was responsible for both crimes, investigators were unable to identify the suspect at that time.
It wasn’t until 2021 that advances in investigative genetic genealogy led authorities to a suspect: Reuben J. Smith, a white male who had lived in Orange County during the 1980s before relocating to Las Vegas. Smith had been arrested in Las Vegas in July 1998 for sexually assaulting and attempting to murder a third woman. DNA collected during that arrest was later matched to the samples found at both the Cuevas and Lloyd crime scenes. Tragically, Smith had died by suicide in 1999 at the age of 39, preventing any formal prosecution.
The surviving victim from the 1998 attack described Smith as “evil,” recounting that he had threatened to kill her during the assault. Her ability to fight back and escape ultimately provided the DNA evidence that helped solve the earlier murders. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the resolution of these cases was made possible by the relentless dedication of investigators and the evolution of forensic science. Although Renee Cuevas, a 27-year-old Hispanic female, did not receive justice during her lifetime, the identification of her killer brought long-awaited answers to her grieving family.
