On August 5, 1970, 84-year-old female Mattie Ophelia Harris was found dead in her kitchen in Miami, Florida. Harris, who was white, had been strangled with a necktie. Her nightgown was pulled up, and her home had been ransacked, suggesting a violent intrusion and a possible sexually motivated crime, although no direct sexual assault was reported. The scene bore disturbing similarities to a series of unsolved murders that had plagued Miami throughout the 1960s and into 1970.
