On January 19, 1974, the decomposed body of 17-year-old white female Cathy Lee Scharf was discovered by hunters in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge near Titusville, Florida. Cathy, a resident of Port Orange, had been reported missing by her mother on December 16, 1973. She had last been seen hitchhiking, a common practice among young people at the time.
