In the quiet community of Warwick, Rhode Island, the end of summer in 1989 was shattered by a horrific act of violence that claimed the lives of 10-year-old Jennifer Heaton, a White female, her mother Joan, and her younger sister Melissa. On September 4th, after not hearing from them over the Labor Day weekend, concerned family members entered their home to a scene of unimaginable horror.
The house was splattered with blood, and the bodies of Joan, Jennifer, and 8-year-old Melissa were discovered.
The investigation into the brutal murders revealed the shocking extent of the violence. Jennifer had been stabbed 62 times. The ferocity of the attack sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, leaving residents fearful and demanding answers. The perpetrator had used kitchen knives with such force that blades had broken off in the victims' bodies. The brutality of the crime scene left even seasoned investigators deeply shaken.
Suspicion soon fell upon a 15-year-old neighbor, Craig Price. Price had a history of breaking and entering and other offenses. During the investigation of the Heaton murders, police noted similarities to another unsolved murder that had occurred two years prior in the same neighborhood, that of Rebecca Spencer. A search of Price's home uncovered incriminating evidence, including bloody knives from the Heaton household. Price was arrested, and he subsequently confessed to the murders of the Heaton family and Rebecca Spencer.
Due to his age at the time of the murders, Craig Price was tried as a juvenile. Under Rhode Island law at the time, this meant he would be released upon turning 21, and his records would be sealed. This sparked public outrage and a campaign by the victims' families and law enforcement to change the law and keep Price incarcerated. While the law was changed to allow juveniles to be tried as adults for serious crimes, it could not be applied retroactively to Price's case. However, due to his violent behavior and further crimes committed while incarcerated, his sentence has been repeatedly extended, and he has remained in prison.
