In the quiet community of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Joseph Scot Greenhill was a man known for his love of the outdoors and a knack for turning scrap metal into art. At 49 years old, he was a father and a grandfather, a man who, according to those who knew him, never met a stranger and had a gift for making people laugh. His life, however, came to a sudden and violent end on the night of December 18, 2024.
An emergency call broke the evening stillness at 9:04 p.m., reporting a shooting at a
residence on Damron Mayo Road in the nearby town of Grayson. When officers from the Kentucky State Police and the Grayson City Police Department arrived at the scene, they found Joseph Greenhill inside the home, dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators stated that Greenhill had entered the residence before he was fatally shot. The Carter County coroner pronounced him dead at the scene.
In the days following the shooting, the Kentucky State Police announced that their investigation was ongoing. As of late December, no charges had been filed in connection with Greenhill's death. Authorities indicated that the case would be presented to the Carter County grand jury for review. Public records show that just six days before his death, on December 12, a Joseph Greenhill of Olive Hill, with the same age, had been arrested by the Carter County Sheriff's office on a charge of second-degree criminal mischief.
This was not his only recent encounter with law enforcement. In April 2022, Joseph S. Greenhill had been taken into custody by the Kentucky State Police on multiple charges, including first-degree stalking, violation of a protective order, second-degree burglary, and intimidating a participant in the legal process. Those who knew him as 'Scotty' or 'Skeeter' remembered a man who loved fishing, hunting, and riding his motorcycle, a skilled welder with a passion for racing that he inherited from his father. He was survived by his parents, a son, a daughter, a grandson, and three siblings.
