Zurijeta Sakanovic was a 21-year-old White female who had recently immigrated to the United States with her family from Teslic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, seeking refuge. The family settled in Iowa, where Zurijeta found work as a maid at the Budgetel Inn in Clive. Her new life, full of promise and hope for a peaceful future away from the turmoil in her homeland, was tragically cut short on September 4, 1997.
On that morning, a supervisor at the hotel noticed her cleaning cart abandoned in a hallway and, upon entering a guest room, made a horrifying discovery. Zurijeta's body was found on the floor, wrapped in a comforter. She had been bound, strangled, and stabbed multiple times.
For years, the brutal slaying remained a cold case, leaving her family devastated and without answers. The shock and grief were so profound that her family made the difficult decision to leave the United States and return to Bosnia. There were no immediate suspects, and the investigation stalled, casting a long shadow over the community. The case was eerily similar to the 1993 murder of another woman, Patricia Lange, who was also killed in a Des Moines area hotel room. Both women had been bound and left in a similar manner, leading investigators to suspect a connection, though definitive proof was initially elusive.
A breakthrough in the case finally came in January 2000 with the arrest of Donald Arthur Piper, a former hotel maintenance worker. Advances in DNA technology allowed investigators to re-examine evidence from the crime scene. A forensic analysis of the comforter that had been wrapped around Zurijeta's body revealed a bloodstain. DNA testing confirmed the blood belonged to Donald Piper, decisively linking him to the murder scene. In June 2002, Piper was tried and found guilty of the first-degree murder of Zurijeta Sakanovic. He was subsequently sentenced to a second life term in prison, having already been convicted for the murder of Patricia Lange. During the sentencing, Zurijeta's sister-in-law confronted Piper in court, expressing the family's deep-seated hatred for him and their wish for his suffering.
