Jerry Dean Thomas, a 43-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on January 23, 1981, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was found strangled in the basement of his home, with the cord of a hairdryer used as the murder weapon. Thomas was the mother of a 12-year-old girl who had been the target of an attempted rape by their neighbor, Reginald Perkins, in December 1980. It is believed that Thomas had recently discovered the assault on her daughter, which may have been the motive for her murder.
Reginald Perkins, a convicted sex offender, was suspected in Thomas's murder, as well as in the killings of two other women in the same neighborhood. However, at the time, there was insufficient evidence to charge him with these homicides. It wasn't until years later that DNA evidence linked Perkins to multiple murders, including those in Fort Worth, Texas.
