In the autumn of 1987, a palpable fear gripped the city of Richmond, Virginia, as a series of brutal murders unfolded. The community was on edge as a predator, who would come to be known as the 'Southside Strangler,' was at large. The victims were women, attacked in the sanctity of their own homes.
The first victim in Richmond was Debbie Dudley Davis, a 35-year-old account executive, who was found murdered in her Westover Hills apartment on September 19, 1987.
Less than a month later, on October 3, Dr. Susan Hellams, a 32-year-old neurosurgery resident at the Medical College of Virginia, was discovered dead in her home. The string of killings continued, creating a climate of anxiety and a massive law enforcement response.
The investigation into these heinous crimes led authorities to Timothy Wilson Spencer, a 25-year-old Richmond resident with a history of burglary. A crucial break in the case came when investigators connected the Richmond murders to a similar crime that had occurred in Arlington, Virginia. Spencer had been staying at a halfway house in South Richmond, within walking distance of the homes of both Davis and Hellams.
Detectives diligently pieced together evidence, and their suspicion of Spencer intensified. He was arrested on January 20, 1988, for the rape and murder of a woman in Arlington. This arrest was a pivotal moment, as it allowed investigators to link him to the Richmond murders through groundbreaking forensic technology.
Timothy Wilson Spencer's case became a landmark in the annals of American criminal justice. He was the first serial killer in the United States to be convicted based on DNA evidence. The DNA found at the crime scenes was matched to Spencer with an incredibly high statistical probability, leaving no doubt as to his guilt. In separate trials, he was convicted of the rape, burglary, and capital murder of Debbie Davis and Susan Hellams. He was also convicted of the murder in Arlington and implicated in another death. For his horrific crimes, Timothy Wilson Spencer was sentenced to death.
