Authorities linked the murders to Howard Neal, a former resident of Ludlow who had moved out of the area shortly after the killings. Neal was later convicted of three additional murders in another state, including the killing of his brother and the sexual assault and murder of his 13-year-old niece and another young girl. He was sentenced to death but later had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment due to his low IQ, which classified him as borderline mentally challenged.
