On January 25, 1973, a tragic event unfolded in the Santa Cruz Mountains near the popular tourist attraction known as the Mystery Spot. Kathleen Louise “Kathy” Prentiss Francis, a 29-year-old white female, and her two sons, David Hughes, aged 9, and Daemon Francis, aged 4, were brutally murdered in their remote cabin. The perpetrator, Herbert Mullin, had initially visited the Francis residence seeking information about his former high school friend, Jim Gianera.
Kathy Francis provided Mullin with Gianera's new address, unaware of the impending danger.
Mullin proceeded to the Gianera home, where he fatally shot both Jim and his wife, Joan. Fearing that Kathy Francis could link him to the Gianera murders, Mullin returned to the Francis cabin. There, he shot Kathy Francis and her two sons. In a frenzied state, he also stabbed all three victims post-mortem. The brutality of the crime scene led investigators to initially suspect a drug-related motive, as both Jim Gianera and Kathy's husband, Bob Francis, were known to be involved in marijuana distribution.
Herbert Mullin's killing spree spanned from October 1972 to February 1973, resulting in 13 confirmed victims. He claimed that his actions were driven by voices instructing him to commit human sacrifices to prevent catastrophic earthquakes in California. On February 13, 1973, Mullin was apprehended after fatally shooting 72-year-old Fred Perez in broad daylight. Witnesses provided a description of Mullin's vehicle, leading to his swift arrest. A. 22 caliber pistol found in his car was linked to several of the murders, including those of Kathy Francis and her children.
During his trial, Mullin was charged with ten counts of murder. He was convicted of first-degree murder for the killings of Kathy Francis and her two sons, as well as Jim and Joan Gianera. The remaining murders resulted in second-degree murder convictions. Mullin was sentenced to life imprisonment and remained incarcerated until his death from natural causes on August 18, 2022, at the age of 75.
