Between 2003 and 2009, a total of 10 to 11 African-American women, many of whom were involved in prostitution and struggled with drug addiction, were found dead in Edgecombe and Halifax counties. Several of the victims' bodies were discovered near Seven Bridges Road in Rocky Mount, leading to the moniker "Seven Bridges Killer." In 2009, Antwan Maurice Pittman, a convicted sex offender with a history of criminal activity, was arrested and charged with the murder of Taraha Nicholson, one of the victims. While Pittman is considered a prime suspect in the other murders, he has not been charged in connection with those cases.
