Stephen Norton, a 55-year-old Black man, was fatally shot on the night of January 3, 2025, at Club Waikiki in northeast Houston, Texas. Houston police were called to the nightclub at 3115 Bay Street at about 11 p.m. after a shooting was reported. When patrol officers entered the establishment, they found Norton unresponsive inside the club with multiple gunshot wounds.
Houston Fire Department paramedics responded but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators initially had no description of the person responsible, but additional evidence quickly began to clarify what had happened. According to information presented by prosecutors during a probable-cause hearing, Norton and Stephon Darial Jackson had been involved in a physical fight outside the nightclub before the shooting. Prosecutors said Norton prevailed in the fight and then returned inside the club. Jackson allegedly followed him back into the establishment, confronted him again and shot him in the chest. Police reported that Norton suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The shooting was reportedly captured on surveillance video, and multiple witnesses identified Jackson as the person who shot Norton. Those pieces of evidence became central to the investigation and gave detectives a named suspect after officers had arrived at the scene without knowing who they were looking for. Houston Police Department homicide detectives M. Castillo and A. Ledford investigated the killing, eventually identifying Jackson as the suspect.
On January 13, ten days after Norton's death, officers from the Houston Police Department's Northeast Patrol Station arrested Stephon Darial Jackson. After consultation with the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Jackson was charged with murder in the 337th State District Court. His bond on the murder charge was initially set at $150,000. However, he remained held without bond in connection with a separate burglary-of-a-habitation case that was already pending against him.
Court information reported after the arrest showed that Jackson had previously pleaded guilty to the burglary case in 2021 and received deferred adjudication. Prosecutors subsequently alleged that he violated the conditions of that arrangement on several occasions. One of those alleged violations followed a May 2024 driving-while-intoxicated charge, to which Jackson later pleaded guilty. A motion seeking punishment in the earlier burglary case was still pending when Norton was killed.
