On February 2, 2025, 21-year-old Joshua LaFrance was found fatally shot in a motel room located in the Cloverleaf area of East Houston, Texas. Responding to a welfare check around 1:30 p.m., deputies from the Harris County Sheriff's Office discovered the young man deceased on the bed, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, identified as a 21-year-old male, was accompanied at the time by a teenage girl and 17-year-old Julian Vela, who would later be charged in connection with the
homicide.
According to court documents, the three individuals had spent the previous night together at the motel. After a trip to a fast-food restaurant, they returned to the motel, where LaFrance and the teenage girl rested on the bed. Vela re-entered the room under the pretense of using the restroom. Shortly thereafter, the girl reported hearing gunshots and witnessed Vela standing over LaFrance, who was gasping for air. Vela allegedly fired a second shot, resulting in LaFrance's death. He then reportedly stole two chains from LaFrance's neck and demanded assistance from the girl in locating the victim's watch.
Following the shooting, Vela is said to have forced the girl into LaFrance's black Cadillac sedan. They drove to a vacant lot where Vela allegedly compelled her to remove her blood-stained shirt, which he then burned along with a towel used to wipe off the blood. During this time, Vela reportedly confessed that the killing was an act of revenge, claiming that LaFrance had previously robbed him. He also threatened the girl's life if she contacted the police. Eventually, Vela dropped her off at a gas station, where she contacted a friend for assistance.
Julian Vela was apprehended on February 6, 2025, in Austin, Texas, through a collaborative effort between the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force and the Austin Police Department. He was charged with capital murder and booked into the Travis County Jail. Authorities have indicated that Vela's actions were motivated by a desire for retribution, and he now faces severe legal consequences, including the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty.
