On the morning of March 18, 2025, 40-year-old Paul Jonte Bussell, an African American man, was fatally shot in a residential neighborhood in northeast Bexar County, Texas. Deputies from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of multiple gunshots at the intersection of Chipping Drive and Oldham Drive around 8:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Bussell seated in a silver 2014 Nissan van that had crashed into a wooden fence near a drainage ditch.
He had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:18 a.m. (
Witnesses reported seeing two men in hoodies and sweatpants fleeing the scene toward Quail Hill Street. One witness identified the shooter as 19-year-old Keylow Ken Kimenker. Investigators discovered that Mr. Bussell and Mr. Kimenker had a prior dispute. On March 12, Mr. Kimenker and an associate, known as "Big Boy," allegedly visited Mr. Bussell's residence under the pretense of purchasing a firearm. During the encounter, "Big Boy" reportedly pointed a gun at Mr. Bussell while Mr. Kimenker stole a firearm. Mr. Bussell had intended to cooperate with authorities to identify the suspects but was attempting to resolve the matter directly with Mr. Kimenker before proceeding with charges.
On the day of the shooting, Mr. Kimenker, who was out on bond for a previous charge of tampering with evidence and prohibited from possessing firearms, was seen with a gun. After the incident, he allegedly attempted to dispose of evidence by instructing someone to discard a bag near a residence on Oldham Road. Later that day, deputies observed Mr. Kimenker leaving a residence in the 7000 block of Oldham Drive and entering a vehicle. He was detained before he could depart the area. A search of the vehicle revealed a pistol with an extended magazine. A subsequent search of his residence uncovered clothing matching the description provided by witnesses.
During questioning, Mr. Kimenker denied involvement in the shooting, claiming he had been at home all day. He was arrested and booked into the Bexar County Jail on a murder charge, with bail set at $750,000.
In the aftermath of Mr. Bussell's death, his family initiated a fundraiser to cover funeral expenses, referring to him as "Paul 'Jonte' Bussell" and expressing their grief over his untimely passing.
