In the quiet community of Hartford, Vermont, the life of a young man, Jonathan Carpenter, came to a tragic end on January 19, 2025. The 22-year-old male from Amherst, Massachusetts, was found with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head in a residence on Fairbanks Turn in Quechee. Emergency services responded to a report of the shooting at approximately 2 p.m.
and transported him to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initial reports from law enforcement indicated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were under investigation and that all individuals involved were acquainted with one another, suggesting it was an isolated incident. The Hartford Police Department initially identified the victim as being 21 years old and from Gardner, Massachusetts, but this was later corrected by his family. For a time, the cause and manner of his death remained undetermined pending an autopsy by the New Hampshire Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
In a later development, the investigation concluded that no foul play was involved in Carpenter's death. The New Hampshire chief medical examiner officially ruled the death a suicide, resulting from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This determination brought an end to the police investigation into any potential suspects or arrests. Jonathan's mother shared that he had been staying at another residence in Hartford before being asked to leave a couple of days prior to his death and that he had been struggling with substance use. He is survived by his mother and four siblings.
