In the early hours of January 13, 2025, the life of 17-year-old Ja’Mareion Deangelo Crawford was tragically cut short. The young, Black/African American male from Eutawville, South Carolina, was fatally shot at a residence on Boo Circle in Santee. Known affectionately as “Mari,” Crawford was a junior at Lake Marion High School & Technology Center, where he was pursuing a future in masonry. He was remembered for his towering height, a big heart, and a smile that could illuminate any room.
His passions included playing football and video games, creating music, and dancing. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends.
The shooting prompted an investigation by the Santee Police Department. In the months that followed, authorities sought help from the public, initially offering a $5,000 reward for information that would lead to an arrest and conviction. This amount was later increased to $7,500 as the search for those responsible continued. The community was left mourning the loss of a young man described as a loving and helpful son, brother, and friend who particularly enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.
A significant development in the case came in August 2025, when 20-year-old Zaquan Shaquez Jamison turned himself in to the North Charleston Police Department. He was subsequently taken into custody by the Santee Police Department. Jamison faces a charge of murder in connection with Crawford's death. He has also been charged with ten counts of attempted murder, as there were several other individuals present in the home at the time of the shooting. Additionally, he is charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
During his arraignment, Jamison proclaimed his innocence, stating that he was a burn victim with hand injuries that would prevent him from being able to pull a trigger. He indicated that his family intended to file a lawsuit in response to the charges. Despite his plea, the legal process against him has commenced. Santee Police Chief Kevin Borghi also indicated that more arrests were pending in the ongoing investigation.
