On April 16, 2025, 14-year-old Hispanic male Simon Julian Cuevas III was fatally shot near Brewer Academy in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred around 2:05 p.m. at the intersection of South Elmendorf and Merida Streets, just two blocks from the school. According to police reports, Simon was attacked by a group of seven fellow students during school dismissal.
During the assault, one of the assailants produced a firearm and shot Simon, who later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Simon was a student at Brewer Academy, a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program within the San Antonio Independent School District that serves students with emotional and behavioral challenges. Following the incident, the school initiated lockdown protocols to ensure student safety. Despite surveillance footage capturing the suspects arriving and leaving the scene, no arrests have been made, and the identities of the assailants remain unconfirmed.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Simon's family has faced additional hardships. They reported receiving threats on social media, leading them to keep funeral services private due to safety concerns. A memorial set up at the site of the shooting was also vandalized over Mother's Day weekend, further deepening the family's grief.
The San Antonio Police Department has released surveillance footage of two individuals considered "persons of interest" in the case. Authorities are seeking the public's assistance in identifying these individuals, who were seen arriving at and fleeing from the crime scene with the suspects. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
Community members have organized vigils and marches to honor Simon's memory and demand justice. Despite these efforts, the case remains unresolved, and the community continues to seek answers and accountability for the loss of the 14-year-old Hispanic male.
