In the late summer evening of August 27, 2003, a call regarding a domestic disturbance came into the Memphis Police Department, sending Officer Anthony Louis Woods into a situation that would tragically be his last. At 35 years old, the African American officer was a respected seven-year veteran of the force, known for his dedication. That night, he responded to the call alone, arriving at a residence on Tarry Park around 7:20 PM. Unbeknownst to him, the scene he was about to enter was already fraught with violence.
Upon making his way inside the home, Officer Woods was immediately confronted by a volatile and dangerous scenario. A man inside had already shot a woman, wounding her in the arm and leg. A struggle quickly erupted between the officer and the armed man. In the ensuing chaos, Officer Woods was shot multiple times, sustaining two gunshot wounds to the head and two to the shoulder. Despite the severity of his injuries, he fought to subdue the suspect.
As other officers began to arrive at the chaotic scene, the suspect attempted to flee through the back of the house. However, his escape was cut short when he was confronted by another officer. Cornered and with no way out, the suspect made a final, fatal decision. He took his own life, bringing a grim and abrupt end to the violent encounter. Officer Woods was rushed to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, but the gravity of his wounds was too much to overcome, and he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival. The man who took his life was identified as the sole offender in the tragic event. Officer Woods left behind a wife, who also served in law enforcement as a deputy jailer, and their three children.
