On the night of March 16, 2025, tragedy struck in Dayton, Ohio, when 38-year-old Marquia Hunter, a Black woman, was fatally shot outside her apartment at City View Terrace. The incident occurred around 11:21 p.m., prompting a 911 call from a man who reported hearing gunfire and expressed concern that his friend had been shot. Upon arrival, Dayton police discovered Hunter deceased in the driveway.

Investigators quickly identified 45-year-old Terrell Arthur Johnson as the primary suspect in the case. Johnson, who had previously been in a relationship with Hunter, was known to have a history of violating protection orders. At the time of the shooting, Hunter had an active protection order against him. Authorities were able to link Johnson to the crime through witness statements, cellphone analysis, and surveillance footage.

Following the investigation, Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, tampering with evidence, and violating a protection order. His bond was set at $2 million, and he is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail. Johnson is scheduled to be arraigned on April 2, 2025.

Hunter’s tragic death has underscored the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of enforcing protection orders. Community members and advocacy groups have since urged individuals experiencing domestic violence to seek help through local resources such as Dayton’s Artemis Center or the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
