On Oct. 27, 2013, Ben was fatally shot in Birmingham's East Lake neighborhood. The shooter has never been found.

That night, a Sunday, Jim was in his Gardendale home by himself. His wife, Ben's mother, had died just three weeks prior of breast cancer.

He heard a knock on his door, and opened it to two police officers who gave Jim a phone number to call. It was the coroner's office, and they said Jim's son Ben had been killed.
