On April 8, 2025, a tragic shooting in Fayetteville, North Carolina, claimed the life of 27-year-old Janaha Smith, a Black female resident of the city. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at approximately 3:15 a.m. in the 2800 block of Gillespie Street. Fayetteville Police responded to reports of gunfire and discovered Smith suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly identified and arrested 24-year-old Shyheem McCall, a Black male also from Fayetteville, in connection with the shooting. McCall was detained at the location and later charged with first-degree murder. Investigators confirmed that Smith and McCall were acquainted, and the shooting was not a random act of violence. McCall is currently being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. Detective A. Wolford of the Fayetteville Police Department has been assigned to the case, and anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers. The community continues to grapple with the loss of Smith, as authorities work to uncover further details surrounding the circumstances of her death.
