On April 28, 2025, Jamal Jones, a 34-year-old man, was fatally shot in Columbus, Ohio, during an attempted robbery at an apartment on Fountain Lane. Columbus police responded to multiple calls reporting gunfire in the area at approximately 4:08 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency responders transported him to Mount Carmel East Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:38 a.m.
Authorities later arrested four juveniles in connection with the
incident. Two boys, aged 12 and 15, were charged with murder on May 2. Subsequently, on May 6, two girls, aged 15 and 17, were also taken into custody for their involvement. Police did not immediately disclose the specific charges against the girls. Investigators revealed that one of the suspects was familiar with someone inside the apartment and had been allowed entry. However, the residents were reportedly unaware that four juveniles would arrive. During the attempted robbery, another man, aged 36, was also targeted and robbed.
The suspects remain in juvenile detention, facing murder charges. The 15-year-old girl appeared in Franklin County Juvenile Court, where her attorney requested a competency evaluation. Authorities have identified the individual who brandished the weapon, though attorneys argue that at least one of the girls did not handle the firearm. Columbus officials have expressed concern over the rise in youth violence, noting that seven individuals under the age of 21 had already been arrested in connection with homicides in 2025, excluding the four juveniles in this case. In response, the city has allocated over $28 million toward summer programs aimed at engaging young people and preventing further violence.
Law enforcement officials emphasized the importance of parental involvement, urging families to monitor their children's activities and social circles. Columbus Division of Police Sgt. James Fuqua described the incident as a tragedy, highlighting the devastating consequences of youth involvement in violent crimes. The suspects are scheduled to remain in custody until their next court appearance.
