Lizaiah LaMeir Burdette, a 14-year-old African American male from Dayton, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on April 29, 2025. Lizaiah, described by his family as a kind and caring individual, was an eighth-grader at Edwin Joel Brown Middle School. His sister, Justice Burdette, shared that he had a vibrant personality and was deeply loved by those around him.

The incident occurred when Lizaiah was found bleeding in a car on Davis Avenue, though authorities later determined that the shooting had taken place on Fauver Avenue, approximately four miles away. A 911 call alerted police to the situation, but the caller indicated that the shooting had not happened at the location where Lizaiah was discovered. He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the investigation, Dayton police arrested 26-year-old Austin Fitchpatrick in connection with the case. Fitchpatrick was taken into custody on Westwood Avenue later that same day. However, he was not booked on suspicion of murder but faced charges related to tampering with evidence and obstructing official business. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional suspects are being pursued or if further charges will be filed.
Lizaiah’s death has sparked conversations about youth violence in Dayton, with his family emphasizing that he was simply a child who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. His sister expressed frustration over social media commentary blaming Lizaiah for being out late, arguing that teenagers often sneak out without their parents' knowledge. She urged people to recognize the tragedy for what it is—a heartbreaking loss of a young life. In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support funeral expenses, quickly reaching its goal, demonstrating the widespread love and support for Lizaiah.
