William R. Kresser, a 53-year-old white male from Kingston, New York, died on March 25, 2025. A detective with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police, Kresser's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained at the DEP Police Academy in Kingston. He was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
His passing has been officially ruled a suicide, and as such, there have been no arrests or suspects in connection with his death.
Born and raised in Kingston, William Kresser was a graduate of Kingston High School, class of 1989, and Syracuse University in 1993. He joined the DEP Police in 2006, serving for nearly two decades and was known for his dedication and positive energy. His colleagues in the Environmental Police Benevolent Association expressed profound sadness at his passing and made supportive services and counseling available to his coworkers.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife Pamela, their daughter Abigail, his parents Charles and Julia, and his three siblings. In the wake of his death, the Environmental Police Benevolent Association created a GoFundMe campaign to provide financial support to his family. Funeral services were held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Kingston.
