On the afternoon of March 28, 2025, a burst of gunfire shattered the daytime calm on a Staten Island street, tragically ending the life of 25-year-old Jesse Pimental. A male resident of the borough, Pimental was struck in the torso by a bullet and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. The incident unfolded as Pimental was leaving a store with friends. It is believed that he was not the intended target of the shooter, who fired multiple shots at one of his companions, with the final, fatal bullet striking Pimental. The day that was meant to mark a new beginning for him, the last day of his probation for a prior weapons conviction, instead became his last.
The investigation into Pimental's death quickly launched into a multi-state manhunt for the suspected gunman. After weeks of intensive police work, authorities tracked their suspect more than 600 miles away to Gastonia, North Carolina. On April 18, 2025, a heavily armed SWAT team descended on a Gastonia apartment complex and arrested 28-year-old Lydell Felton in connection with the fatal shooting. The dramatic arrest brought a sense of relief to Pimental's grieving family, who expressed their hope that justice would be served.
Following his capture, Felton was held in North Carolina as he awaited legal proceedings to determine his return to New York to face charges. An extradition hearing was anticipated to decide whether he would be voluntarily transferred or compelled to return to Staten Island to be formally charged in connection with the death of Jesse Pimental. The community was left to mourn a young life cut short, while the wheels of justice began to turn for the man accused of pulling the trigger.
