In the early morning hours of June 9, 1984, a young man named Hank Gafforio vanished from his Staten Island neighborhood, leaving behind a mystery that would endure for decades. The 22-year-old white male, who was known to have a low IQ and functioned at the emotional and mental level of a 15-year-old, had been out for a night of drinking. He first tried to get a drink at a bar called Mugs Away but was denied service.
Undeterred, he made his way to the nearby Spa Lounge in Port Richmond, where he stayed until the bar closed around 4:00 a.m. He was last seen wearing a red and white striped t-shirt, dark blue jeans, and white sneakers. After leaving the lounge, Hank was never seen or heard from again.
As the hours turned into days, concern for Hank grew, and he was reported missing. The investigation into his disappearance soon pointed to a sinister figure who cast a long shadow over Staten Island: Andre Rand. Rand, a convicted child kidnapper and suspected serial killer, lived on the same block as the Gafforio family. This chilling proximity, combined with Hank's vulnerability due to his developmental disability, made him a person of significant interest in the case. There were even some accounts that suggested a person resembling Rand was seen with Gafforio around the time he disappeared.
The suspicion surrounding Andre Rand was not unfounded. He had a disturbing history and was a suspect in the disappearances of several other individuals from Staten Island, including Holly Hughes, Alice Pereira, Ethel Atwell, and Tiahease Jackson. Rand was later convicted of the 1987 kidnapping of Jennifer Schweiger, a 12-year-old girl with Down syndrome whose body was found buried on the grounds of the former Willowbrook State School, near a campsite Rand was known to use. While he was convicted of kidnapping Jennifer, the jury could not reach a verdict on the murder charge. He was also convicted of kidnapping Holly Hughes, who remains missing.
Despite the strong circumstantial evidence and the connections to Rand's other suspected crimes, no one has ever been arrested or charged in the disappearance of Hank Gafforio. His case is classified as an endangered missing person, and foul play is highly suspected. The story of his disappearance was featured in the 2009 documentary 'Cropsey,' which delved into the dark history of Andre Rand and the string of missing persons cases on Staten Island.
