In the spring of 2025, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of Wilfredo 'Freddy' Vasquez Jr., a 36-year-old man from Schenectady, New York. The fatal encounter unfolded on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 23rd, in the vicinity of 1807 Van Vranken Avenue. An argument, the specifics of which remain undisclosed, escalated to a tragic conclusion when Vasquez was shot in the torso. First responders arrived at the scene shortly before 3:25 p.m. to find him wounded.
Despite their efforts and his subsequent transport to Ellis Hospital, Vasquez succumbed to his injuries.
Remembered as a man with a 'hustle in his heart,' Freddy Vasquez was a father who was actively working to create a positive path in his life. He was known for his love of dance, fashion, and cooking, and for his generosity, often preparing meals for the homeless. Born and raised in the Bronx, he was described as a loving brother, father, and uncle with a deep loyalty to his family. His untimely death left behind his children, his partner, and a large extended family to grapple with their profound loss.
The investigation into Vasquez's death moved swiftly, and within a day, Schenectady police had a suspect in custody. Cecil A. Toland, 19 years old at the time, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. In a turn of events that brought a swifter conclusion to the legal proceedings than a full trial, Cecil Toland, then 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in December 2025. As part of a plea bargain, he admitted to shooting Vasquez. This admission of guilt in court brought some measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the Schenectady community. Toland's sentencing was scheduled for the following March, with an expected prison term of 18 years to life.
