On Sunday, January 26, 2025, a violent incident occurred in Port Gibson, Mississippi, resulting in the loss of a local resident. Authorities responded to a call regarding a shooting on Vine Street, specifically in the vicinity of the 1201 block. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered the victim, identified as Trevionne Almontae Claiborne, a 24-year-old Black male, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The Port Gibson Police Department, assisted by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department, immediately secured the scene and launched a homicide investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
Following the initial inquiry, investigators identified a suspect in connection with the shooting. Lakendrick Claiborne was taken into custody by police shortly after the incident. Two days later, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Lakendrick appeared before the Port Gibson Municipal Court for arraignment. During this hearing, presided over by the Honorable Judge Odom, the suspect was formally charged in relation to the death. The judge set his bond at $50,000, and the case was marked for further legal proceedings as the investigation continued to develop.
The community of Port Gibson gathered weeks later to pay their final respects. A visitation was held at Barnes Chapel & Mortuary Service, followed by a funeral service on February 16, 2025, at Spring Hill M.B. Church. The service was officiated by Reverend Carl Shorter, marking the conclusion of the immediate mourning rituals for the victim while the legal case against the accused moved forward in the court system.
