On April 23, 2025, 35-year-old Christina Lynn Rentchler, an African American female from St. Louis, Missouri, was fatally shot inside a residence in the O'Fallon neighborhood. At the time of her death, Rentchler was in the second trimester of pregnancy with her fifth child, a daughter she was eagerly expecting. The incident occurred in the presence of her four young daughters, ranging in age from two to ten, as well as another child who was in the home.
The sequence of violence began
when the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Vanier T. Jones, reportedly became angry and opened fire on another woman living in the house. This surviving victim later recounted to investigators that after being shot, she played dead to avoid further harm. She told police she then heard Jones ask the children where their mother was. Jones proceeded to locate Rentchler and shot her multiple times, including fatal wounds to the back of the head, as her children watched.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene on Farlin Avenue to find Rentchler unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and medical personnel confirmed that her unborn child also did not survive the attack. The other woman who had been shot was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but survived to provide a critical account of the events leading up to the double homicide. Jones had reportedly been staying at the residence with the surviving victim prior to the shooting.
Law enforcement officers subsequently arrested Vanier T. Jones, who was found to have a lengthy criminal history and was reportedly absconding from federal supervised release at the time of the killings. Prosecutors charged him with 17 crimes, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Rentchler and her unborn child, several counts of endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action, first-degree assault, and illegal firearm possession. Jones was ordered to be held without bail pending trial.
