On New Year's Day in 2025, the quiet community of Northfield Township near Whitmore Lake, Michigan, was shaken by a violent intrusion that left two family members dead and another seriously injured. Seventy-four-year-old Stevie Ray Smith and his 48-year-old daughter, Jennifer Lyn Bernhard, were found shot to death inside their home on Nollar Bend Road. Jennifer's husband, Jeffrey Alan Bernhard, was also shot but survived the attack and was hospitalized in stable condition.
The tragedy unfolded around 8:30 p.m. and was further compounded by the abduction of two young children, aged nine and four, from the residence.
The ensuing investigation, a collaborative effort involving the Northfield Township Police, Ann Arbor Police, Michigan State Police, and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, led to the swift apprehension of three suspects. The two abducted children were also safely recovered and taken for evaluation. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 42-year-old Shuvonne Vinson, 37-year-old Gregory Callhan, and 60-year-old Keith Finley. The incident is believed to have stemmed from a custody dispute, as one of the abducted children was a foster child in the care of the Bernhards, and Vinson is reportedly the child's biological mother.
The three suspects face a litany of serious charges, including two counts of open murder, one count of assault with intent to murder, two counts of kidnapping, and multiple conspiracy and firearms-related offenses. During a court appearance, Vinson reportedly had an outburst, expressing that the victims 'deserved to die.' The brazen and tragic nature of the crime sent ripples of shock through the typically peaceful community, leaving neighbors and residents unsettled by the violent loss of life.
