Jajuan Marls, a 24-year-old male, was fatally shot on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the Extended Stay America hotel in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The incident led to the arrest of 51-year-old Luke Svacha of Center Line.
Following the shooting, Svacha fled the hotel and returned to his home in Center Line. When police arrived, he refused to exit, leading to a standoff that lasted for several hours.
Crisis negotiators communicated with Svacha through text messages in an effort to persuade him to surrender. After a lengthy negotiation, Svacha eventually dropped his firearm, exited his house, and was taken into custody by the police. During his arrest, one police officer sustained an injury.
Svacha was subsequently charged with first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and resisting and obstructing a police officer. During a court hearing, text messages allegedly sent by Svacha were revealed. In one message, he purportedly wrote, 'I know what I did, and whether it was deserved or not. I took it upon myself to be judge, jury and executioner.' Another message allegedly read, 'That's me, wicked, made for destruction and pain, that's all seems to want from me.'
During a preliminary examination, a judge determined there was enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial on the charges of first-degree premeditated murder, felony firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon. However, the charge of resisting and obstructing an officer was dismissed due to a lack of sufficient evidence. Svacha was bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court for trial and was scheduled for arraignment on August 4. He was denied bond.
