Rachel Renee Wooten, a 23-year-old mother, died on April 15, 2025, in a shooting incident at her home in Highland Township, Michigan. The quiet life she shared with her fiancé and their infant son was shattered that afternoon, leaving a community in shock and a family grappling with a sudden and violent loss.
On that Tuesday afternoon, authorities received a 911 call from Michael Devon Webb, Wooten's 21-year-old fiancé. He reported that he had shot his fiancée and himself. When deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office arrived at their residence on Maple Drive, they found Wooten deceased from a single gunshot wound to the neck, which appeared to have been inflicted at very close range. Webb was also present at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. The couple's six-month-old baby was found unharmed inside the home.
Initially, Webb claimed that the shooting was a tragic accident that occurred while he was cleaning his gun. However, investigators from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office quickly determined that the evidence found at the scene did not align with his account. Following an investigation, the case was turned over to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office.
Michael Devon Webb was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was arraigned in 52-1 District Court and is being held without bond in the Oakland County Jail. If convicted of first-degree murder, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors have characterized the incident as a domestic violence tragedy.
