In the small community of Woodbine, Kentucky, a verbal dispute escalated into a fatal encounter, claiming the life of Richard Willoughby, a 43-year-old male from Lexington. The incident unfolded at the residence of his brother-in-law, John Lang.
Leading up to the shooting, tensions had reportedly been simmering between Willoughby and Lang, with arguments throughout the evening touching on sensitive subjects. The situation took a tragic turn, resulting in Willoughby being fatally shot.
Authorities were alerted to the scene by a distressing 911 call from Katie Willoughby, Lang's sister and the victim's wife, who reported that her brother had shot her husband. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Willoughby deceased on the kitchen floor with a single gunshot wound to his head. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
John Lang, 34, was taken into custody at the home and subsequently charged with murder. During questioning, Lang claimed that the shooting was an accident. He told investigators that during the heated argument, he had picked up a handgun from the kitchen table with the intention of securing it, but the firearm discharged, striking Willoughby. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as a homicide. Earlier on the same day, police had been called to the residence due to a report from Lang's fiancée, who stated that he was intoxicated and had fired a weapon into the air. Lang was held at the Whitley County Detention Center on a $1 million bond. Following a preliminary hearing, a judge found probable cause to forward the case to a grand jury for indictment consideration.
