On a summer day in 2016, what began as a routine trip for a Florence, Kentucky couple ended in a tragedy that would take months to fully uncover. Robert Jones, a 38-year-old White male, and his girlfriend, Crystal Warner, 35, traveled to a remote property they owned in Springfield, Kentucky, on July 3, 2016. The purpose of their visit was to speak with their tenant, Craig Pennington, at the cabin he rented from them on Texas Mackville Road.
This encounter would be their last.
Concerns arose when the couple failed to return home and could not be reached. Five days after they were last seen, Warner's gray 2012 Volkswagen was discovered abandoned near Interstate 75 close to Georgetown. As the investigation into their disappearance intensified, a chilling account emerged. Witnesses reported seeing Pennington shoot both Jones and Warner and then remove their bodies from the property. This eyewitness testimony led to the arrest of Craig Pennington, who was subsequently charged with two counts of murder. Despite the charges, the bodies of Robert Jones and Crystal Warner remained missing.
The search for the missing couple was extensive, involving law enforcement and concerned family and community members. In the months that followed, their remains were discovered in separate locations. Crystal Warner's body was found in Bath County, and a month later, Robert Jones's body was discovered near Winchester. With the recovery of the victims, the legal proceedings against Craig Pennington moved forward. Prosecutors announced their intention to seek the death penalty in the case.
However, the case would never reach a trial. In December 2020, while awaiting his day in court, Craig Pennington died from complications related to COVID-19. His death brought an unexpected and somber end to the legal chapter of the double homicide, leaving the families of Robert Jones and Crystal Warner without the finality of a trial and conviction.
