David Keith Shaulis, a 57-year-old man, was found deceased in his Bishopville, Maryland, home on the evening of May 12, 2025. A talented handyman and skilled carpenter, Mr. Shaulis was known for his warm personality and willingness to help others. He had a passion for the ocean, motorcycles, and classic muscle cars.
On the night of his death, Maryland State Police troopers from the Berlin Barrack were dispatched to his residence on Shell Mill Road shortly before 9:30 p.m.
The call came from a woman, later identified as 61-year-old Bonnie Hackendorn, who reported that her boyfriend had been shot. Upon their arrival, troopers were met by Hackendorn inside the home, where they discovered Mr. Shaulis unresponsive on the floor with an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him deceased at the scene.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation. Based on the evidence collected and the preliminary investigation, authorities arrested Hackendorn. After consultation with the Worcester County State's Attorney's Office, she was charged with first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and other firearm-related offenses. Hackendorn was subsequently transported to the Worcester County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond. Mr. Shaulis's body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
