In the early morning hours of March 12, 2025, a verbal dispute at the Bluegrass Inn on Winchester Avenue in Ashland, Kentucky, escalated into a fatal encounter for Barry Justin Burton. The 30-year-old man, a resident of Ashland, was found with a gunshot wound in the motel's parking lot. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Burton was quickly flown to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries a little after 6:15 a.m.
The altercation that led to the shooting allegedly involved another Ashland man, 30-year-old Christopher Hammond. According to police, what began as a verbal disagreement between Burton and Hammond tragically turned violent. Following the incident, law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the deadly shooting.
As a result of the investigation, the Ashland Police Department arrested Christopher Hammond. He has since been charged with murder in connection with the death of Barry Justin Burton. Hammond was taken into custody and is being held at the Boyd County Detention Center. Authorities have stated that they believe this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
