Wayne Shaw, a 61-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on January 29, 2025, in Oakland, California. The incident occurred in the early morning hours on the 1200 block of 49th Avenue, an industrial area of the city. Authorities responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations and reports of gunfire, arriving at the scene to find Shaw suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Paramedics provided emergency medical assistance and transported him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to preliminary investigations, multiple suspects attempted to force their way onto a property using a vehicle. Shaw, who was inside the property, confronted the intruders, leading to a violent exchange in which he was shot multiple times. The location was later identified as a cannabis business, suggesting that the suspects may have been attempting a robbery or forced entry.
On February 13, 2025, Oakland police arrested 33-year-old Maijji Jackson in connection with Shaw’s homicide. Authorities confirmed that Jackson was one of the individuals involved in the incident, though they continue to investigate and are actively seeking additional suspects. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office is currently reviewing the case, and Jackson is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
Shaw’s death marked the 12th homicide in Oakland in 2025, highlighting ongoing concerns about violent crime in the city. His passing also drew attention due to his connection to Bay Area rap legend Too Short, as Shaw was the older brother of the famed musician. The investigation remains open, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant information, photos, or videos to come forward to assist in identifying further suspects.
