Michael Lipford, a 68-year-old man from Chicago, Illinois, was found dead in the basement of his North Lawndale home on March 7, 2025. His body was discovered by emergency responders who had been called to the residence due to a fire. Upon extinguishing the flames, authorities found Lipford’s remains, which had been dismembered. His arms and right leg had been severed, and he had sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and chest.
Investigators also noted deep cuts to his left leg, along with a neck injury. The Cook County medical examiner’s office later confirmed that Lipford had died as a result of these gunshot wounds.
Inside the residence, investigators discovered contractor bags, a reciprocating saw, shrink wrap, and a cellphone, suggesting that an attempt had been made to further dismember the body. The fire itself was determined to have been intentionally set, leading authorities to classify the case as both a homicide and an arson. Lipford, who had lived in the same block on Kirkland Avenue, was known to have kept money in his home, which had previously been a concern for his family.
Lipford’s family, including his brother Roy Lipford, expressed shock and confusion over the brutal nature of his death. Roy, who had been looking forward to visiting his brother, instead found himself in Chicago to identify Michael’s remains. The family described Michael as a soft-spoken man who lived alone with his cat, Grey, and a fish tank. Due to a hip replacement, his mobility had been limited in recent years, preventing him from attending family funerals. His relatives never imagined that he would be the victim of such violence.
Authorities have questioned a person whom Lipford had known previously, but no arrests have been confirmed at this time. The investigation remains ongoing as police continue to search for answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
