In the quiet afternoon of February 1, 2025, a residence in the 900 block of Kramer Court in Junction City, Kansas, became the scene of a tragedy that would claim the life of 22-year-old Carron D. Carter, a Black/African American male. Around 12:45 p.m., the tranquility of the neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire, prompting a swift response from the Junction City Police Department.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Carter inside the home, suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Emergency medical services were immediately rendered, and Carter was rushed to Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus for urgent care. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy was scheduled for later in the week to determine the precise cause of death.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 27-year-old Jonathan M. Lee, a soldier stationed at the nearby Fort Riley. According to witness accounts, the events leading up to the fatal shooting were both swift and violent. Lee reportedly arrived at the Kramer Court residence and forced his way inside. He then proceeded to an upstairs room, where he retrieved a handgun from a closet. A heated argument ensued between Lee and Carter, culminating in Lee allegedly shooting Carter in the stomach. Following the altercation, Lee fled the scene and returned to Fort Riley. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Junction City Police Department, the Geary County Sheriff's Office, the Fort Riley Police Department, and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division.
The search for the suspect did not last long, as authorities located and apprehended Jonathan M. Lee at Fort Riley. He was taken into custody and subsequently transported to the Geary County Detention Center. Lee has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond. As part of their investigation, law enforcement officials recovered significant evidence, including Lee's vehicle and a Glock 23. 40 caliber handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting. Court documents later revealed a prior connection between the suspect and a witness in the case; Lee had been previously married to the witness, with their divorce finalized in 2024. It was also noted that Carter and Lee had only recently met before the fatal encounter. As the legal process moves forward, Lee was scheduled for a court appearance on February 20, 2025.
