Miljka Mira Maksic, a 76-year-old woman from North Port, Florida, passed away on January 26, 2025. She was known for her deep commitment to poetry and religion, having spent her later years in Florida immersed in literary circles. Originally educated in Belgrade, she pursued economic studies before moving to the United States, where she lived in San Francisco and Hot Springs, Arkansas, with her husband, Miroslav Maksic.
Her passing was initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but further investigation revealed inconsistencies in the scene.
Authorities responded to the couple’s home in North Port after receiving a call from a friend who claimed that Miljka Maksic had shot herself. However, forensic analysis and an autopsy determined that the positioning of the firearm and the trajectory of the gunshot wounds did not align with a self-inflicted injury. Miljka Maksic suffered two gunshot wounds—one that exited through her cheeks into her shoulder and another fatal shot to her head, which lodged into her left hand. The firearm was found in her left hand, but investigators concluded that her physical frame and the nature of the injuries made it impossible for her to have fired the fatal shot herself.
Following these findings, North Port Police arrested her husband, 88-year-old Miroslav Maksic, on suspicion of murder. Investigators noted that his statements changed multiple times during questioning, and his account of events lacked consistency. The medical examiner’s office played a crucial role in uncovering the truth, leading to charges against Miroslav Maksic for murder without premeditation. He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail without bond.
