On February 12, 2025, the quiet community of Lenexa, Kansas, was disturbed by a grim discovery that marked the city's first and second homicides of the year. Inside a home on West 90th Street, police found the bodies of two women, later identified as 63-year-old female Valerie Howard and her 71-year-old former sister-in-law, Joyce Austin. Both women had been fatally shot, their lives brought to a violent end in what should have been the safety of their shared residence.
The initial call to authorities was for a welfare check, a request that tragically uncovered the double homicide.
The investigation quickly focused on a single suspect, Valerie's 34-year-old son, Luke Anthony Howard, who also lived at the home. In a bizarre turn of events, Luke Howard reportedly walked into a Walgreens pharmacy in Liberty, Missouri, with blood on his clothes and confessed to the killings. He was taken into custody by the Liberty Police Department and allegedly admitted to shooting his mother and his aunt. The motive for the brutal act appeared to stem from domestic turmoil; his aunt, Joyce Austin, had recently served him with a 30-day eviction notice. Following his confession, he informed officers that the firearm used in the shootings was in his vehicle.
