In the early morning hours of December 30, 2024, the life of Christina Blount, a 38-year-old Black or African American woman, was tragically cut short in Iowa City, Iowa. At approximately 2:38 a.m., the Iowa City Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 600 block of South Dodge Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Blount, who had sustained gunshot wounds.
She was promptly transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Blount's death was immediately launched and remains an active and ongoing case. Law enforcement officials have dedicated hundreds of hours to following up on all known leads in an effort to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Investigators have publicly stated that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident. As of late January 2025, the Johnson County Medical Examiner's Office had not yet released the final autopsy report detailing the official cause and manner of death.
To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Iowa City Police Department has made repeated appeals to the community for assistance in solving the case. They have urged residents and businesses in the vicinity of the 600 block of South Dodge Street to review any security camera footage from the early morning hours of December 30th that might contain crucial evidence. A reward of up to $1,000 has been offered by the Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers for any information that leads to an arrest. The police department continues to encourage anyone with information to come forward to help bring justice for Christina Blount and her loved ones.
